New York Bill Pushes to Ban Fur by 2021
VegNews find out that this month, New York assemblywoman and animal-rights activist Linda Rosenthal introduced new legislation that would ban the sale and production of fur statewide by 2021. “Increasingly, consumers are looking to make ethical and sustainable purchases—fur is neither of those,” Rosenthal said. “The fur trade has at its core a violence toward animals that is antithetical with our modern views on animals as human companions and sentient beings.” Fur bans are currently in effect in several California cities, including West Hollywood, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In December, assemblywoman Laura Friedman proposed California State Fur Ban (AB 44) which passed its first hearing, 8 to 4, in front of the California Assembly’s Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee on March 12.

You Can Now Order a Vegan Chicken Bucket … and Eat the Actual Bucket
VegNews find out that tomorrow, United Kingdom-based delivery platform Deliveroo will offer the Plant Based Bucket—a vegan “chicken and chips” meal that is packaged in edible buckets. The meal was created by vegan brand Alpro in honor of its own holiday Plant Power Day and features mushroom nuggets, sweet potato fries (“chips”), and a creamy garlic dip. The bucket is made from a combination of seeds (such as fennel, sesame, nigella, and pumpkin), nuts, and spices, and is meant to be consumed in conjunction (or after) the meal. “We’ve always said that the future of food is plant-based, because this way of eating is good for people and good for the planet—and now, thanks to Alpro, plant-based could be the future for takeaways, too,” Stephanie Balsom-Eynon, head of Plant Power at Alpro, said. “For us, it’s even more exciting to bring this ‘world first’ to life on Plant Power Day, because we created this day to encourage people to add more plants to their plates and see how tasty and exciting easy it can be. Hopefully, in launching [the] Plant Based Bucket, we will inspire even the most carnivorous Deliveroo customers to give plant-based eating a try—on Plant Power Day, and beyond.”
