Kim Basinger and Priscilla Presley Protesting Korea’s Dog Meat Trade
According to USA Today Basinger and Presley, both longtime animal lovers and supporters of People of the Ethical Treatment of Animals were joined by Donna D’Errico of “Baywatch” and voice actress E.G. Daily of Nickelodeon’s soon-to-be-rebooted “Rugrats” in a protest outside the consulate of South Korea in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Their goal: to raise awareness in America about the annual “inhumane slaughter” of about one million dogs in the Korean dog-meat trade alone.
Live Kindly revealed that Hollywood stars and activists Priscilla Presley and Kim Basinger recently protested with signs and real dead dogs in a confronting statement against the South Korean dog meat trade. The protest was said to be the largest in the world against the cause. The pair stood with other activists outside of the Consulate General Of The Republic Of Korea. Basinger, who is 64 years old, attended with her partner Mitch Stone as well as Presley, 73, Donna D’Errico, 50, and EG Daily, 56, among other attendees.
TMZ talked to Kim at the protest, which went down in L.A. Tuesday at the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, and she says the demonstration is about speaking out against what’s wrong … and killing dogs is definitely wrong.
She admits the dog meat trade has been part of Korean culture, especially with the older generation in S. Korea … but she thinks it’s time for a change.
Oxygen noted that two million dogs are reportedly killed for food every year in South Korea, and more than 100,000 metric tons of dog meat is consumed annually, according to the Animal Welfare Institute. The animals are kept in dog farms, often in cramped cages stacked on top of each other, according to the Institute. The dogs are sometimes slaughtered in full view of the other dogs, and maybe intentionally terrorized prior to being killed due to a traditional belief that experiencing high levels of adrenaline will make the animal’s meat more tender.
Fighting for the great cause is always respectfully.
